August 2017 Makeup Favorites

Happy Sunday! Today I come to you with my August makeup favorites. I don’t have many favorites as I practice investing in products that I actually will use when I wear makeup (which isn’t everyday anymore since I stopped teaching), but what I do have were stand-out products for me when I was on vacation for a month, and it was a very hot and sweaty summer ๐Ÿ˜€

All the products mentioned in this post are being sported on my face in the above selfie ๐Ÿ™‚

NOTE: Some of the following images have been brightened but not to the point of distortion!

Favorite #1: MAC Single Eyeshadow in Parfait Amour (frost)

What a throwback! I bought this years ago, like, 8 at least. This was the third single eyeshadow I purchased from MAC. I used it once or twice for an all over wash on the lids and since then never took it back out of my eyeshadow collection. My everyday makeup look consists of an eyeliner and matching eyeshadow to set it. The problem with that is that I use an eyeshadow from a rather large eyeshadow palette, which made it difficult to pack for my vacation. I dug through my collection and discovered this little gem and I was so sad that I left it alone for so long! It’s a pigmented, iridescent, vibrant purple. When you tilt your head in the light, it looks blue! So much dimension is packed in this single shadow and it looks great paired over my metallic purple eyeliner.

Favorite #2: NARS Blush in Deep Throat

Around 3 years ago when I was dabbling in the natural and organic skincare and makeup brands world, I came across blushes by 100% Pure. Long story short, the blush shattered long before it was used up (the blush was beautiful, though) and I wanted to return to NARS, since my HG blush is the cult favorite shade in Orgasm. This shade does not disappoint me! As pigmented asย Orgasm is, this blush packs such a punch. As with my highlighter, I’m heavy-handed with this blush (you can see that I put two layers on the left swatch in the 3rd picture above) and I end up looking like I ran a mile with super flushed cheeks! (This is my preferred way to do cardio.) Good thing is it blends like a dream. You can see flecks of glitter in the pan but you can’t see them on your face. It does provide a gorgeous natural glow!

Favorite #3: Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Matte Bronzer

This is another cult classic that I just had to check out for myself. I love how this bronzer doesn’t make my face look muddy and dirty. Bronzers are meant to be slightly orange because that’s the color your skin pulls when it tans. This product is in between brown and orange so it looks natural. I wear such a thick white sunscreen that this brings color back to my face (why, Badger? ;O). It doesn’t make me look like I got a tan, but there’s a glow and dimension to the face that isn’t present without use of this bronzer. It definitely shows up on the face but it’s easy to blend out if needed. It also works well as a natural contour. Per Wayne Goss’s recommendation, it looks more natural to use a bronzer to contour with, especially the nose, since contour powders are more gray-toned and if you don’t know how to blend that out well, it’ll look horrible! I also wore this in the heat and humidity of Orlando, Florida when I was there on vacation in July and it stayed put!

Favorite #4: Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Highlighter in Sin

I heard that these highlighters are chunky and don’t blend well. My experience with this highlighter is nothing else but GLOW! It’s not a natural-looking highlighter at all. Yet, I used this when I was a teacher ๐Ÿ˜€ I apply this gorgeous champagne honey pot on the top of my cheekbones and down the bridge of my nose. I don’t care if I look overdone; I didn’t buy this to look naturally glow-y. At work, I wanted to blind everybody I passed in the hallway to distract them from my nervousness! It blends out well on my cheekbones with my MAC 224 fluffy blending blush. It’s also a very soft highlighter; when I dug my finger into it to take swatches, it felt like butter<3

Favorite #5: NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in Antwerp

It goes without saying that the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams are my favorite lip products ever. They’re creamy, smell like a non-offensive sweet clay, SUPER pigmented and when they start to wear off, they leave behind a beautiful stain. I love this color so much for the spring and summer. It’s a florescent coral hot pink color. It looks cute in the daytime, but sexy at night, too. I dab the product onto my lips with the wand and then use a finger to rub it in. Once it sets, it stays… until you eat, of course.

Favorite #6: Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder in Natural Beige

I’m surprised when I picked this up that I got my perfect shade. My tip when shopping for a powder is to look at the undertone! See my finger swipe in the product? That, my friend, is dedication to get a swatch that never showed up on my skin ๐Ÿ˜€ This is very powdery, so don’t expect any creaminess in the swatch or while applying it to the face. It can look cake-y when you layer it over concealer, so be sure to tap it off your brush first. This powder replaced my beloved Maybelline Dream Matte Powder (I’m still mourning about it), but it does its job. I don’t like this powder to set my under-eye concealer. If you think your concealed pimple parts are dry, your under-eyes are so much drier and this powder will exacerbate that. I found this out when I couldn’t pack my favorite under-eye powder for vacation!

Favorite #7: NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Black/Noir

This brow pencil has definitely made its way onto my HG makeup list. I bought ABH’s pencil in Graphite (which I loved) before buying this one and I don’t know what happened, but one day, a huge piece of it flew out of the tube. Being the crazed makeup person that I am (more like, I just dropped an expensive brow pencil, so heck yes, I’m diving for it), I picked it up and put it back in. But, it just wasn’t the same! I couldn’t twist the pencil up anymore and within a day, the product completely dried out. Here came its dupe and I haven’t looked back. I went to ULTA last month and ended up buying two more ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s harder than ABH’s pencil which I like because it doesn’t deposit that much pigment. I can create feather-like strokes in the front of my brows, and I can create super natural-looking brows within minutes. The spoolie it comes with on the other end is the perfect spoolie to blend out any darker spots. It’s stiff and dense which gives me more control for doing so. I didn’t think the color would suit my brows because of the whole “your brow product should be 2 shades lighter than your hair color” rule, but I find that my brows look more natural if I match my brow color to my hair color. If you’re wondering, yes, I prefer this to brow powder. It’s more natural and quicker to apply!

What are your August favorites? Let me know! ๐Ÿ™‚
